A WHEELCHAIR THAT CLIMBS STAIRS
Werdenberg Castle is now fully accessible up to the attic storey by people with restricted mobility.
An individually operable power wheelchair awaits visitors with restricted mobility in the castle courtyard or on the square behind the castle. The vehicle allows them to ascend the stairs into the castle by themselves. Throughout their visit they are accompanied by a trained member of the castle personnel.
It is necessary to book a visit in advance by contacting the local tourist board, Werdenberg Tourismus. The person with restricted mobility must have experience of independent wheelchair use (mechanical or electric).
The SCEWO BRO power wheelchair
The SCEWO BRO power wheelchair was invented by the start-up SCEWO in Winterthur. Many people with restricted mobility already have a power wheelchair in their homes, and the State Museum is also equipped with one for its visitors’ convenience.
The Werdenberg Castle vehicle was financed by the foundation Stiftung Cerebral. The acquisition was made in an uncomplicated manner thanks to the support of the St. Gallen Department of the Interior, the public works service and the Friends of Werdenberg Castle.
It is of great importance to Stiftung Cerebral that people with physical disabilities should be able to attend cultural events and exhibitions. Its director Thomas Erne says, “What we’d like is that the people affected are not excluded from anywhere, but can get actively involved. That’s why we keep launching projects to enable them to be more active in the way they spend their leisure time”.

PARKING
People with restricted mobility can take the “Egeten” junction to drive up to the castle. During the visit to the castle, cars should be parked in a public parking place, if possible.
ACCESS TO THE CASTLE COURTYARD
The Bistro in the castle courtyard is fully accessible to wheelchair users and people with a walking aid.
