THE RELIEF MODEL OF THE
CANTON ST. GALLEN

The circular relief model in the attic storey of the castle shows the canton of St. Gallen with Appenzell enclosed and with peripheral sections of neighbouring Liechtenstein and the cantons of Graubünden, Thurgau, Zurich and Glarus.

The scale of the model is 1:20,000 and the topography of the landscape is exaggerated to a ratio of 1:2. The model documents the extent of urbanisation at the turn of the millennium.

The plaster relief was made in 1998 by the St Gallen model-building firm Gnädinger for the battlement storey of Werdenberg Castle tower and was renovated in 2015/16.

HEAR THE SOUNDS OF THE CANTON

Gushing waters from Tamina Gorge, Vespers at St. Gallen Cathedral, a multistorey carpark in the town of Wil, cowbells by the autobahn – the relief takes you on a sonic voyage of discovery through the highly varied canton. Sound recordings have been made with a stereo microphone at a number of locations in the canton of St Gallen. A precise spatial recreation of selected sites is offered by means of sound, reminding us of familiar situations and localities.

FAVOURITE PLACES

People in the canton can be heard in these recordings talking about a place in the canton of St. Gallen that they particularly like. Why are the speakers attached to the places they have chosen? What makes the place exceptional? And – where is my favourite place?

TELL US!

Do you have a short story to tell about a place in the canton? Is there a particular phenomenon that can be experienced only there? Do you know a song or a poem about some very special place?

If so, please get in touch with us. Maybe your contribution will soon sound out from one of the valleys or hills, from the shore of one of the lakes, or from a village on the relief model of the canton of St Gallen.
