An integrated permanent exhibition has been on show at the twin museums in the Schlangenhaus and the castle since spring 2015. During the castle’s open season from 1 April to 31 October there is a varied programme of guided tours round the museums and the old town of Werdenberg and events for children and families. The seasonal programme is complemented by exhibitions on special themes and regional artistic productions.
THE OLD TOWN AND THE MUSEUMS OF WERDENBERG
Explore 800 years of history in a unique architectural setting. Granted the right to hold to hold markets and defended by a town wall at an early date, Werdenberg is one of the few surviving urban ensembles of medieval timber buildings in Europe and has been placed on Switzerland’s register of heritage sites of national significance.
With audiovisual projections, short audio features and engaging, visitor-friendly displays, the exhibitions in the Museums of Werdenberg tell the story of the rulers in the castle and the ordinary people in the small town, known as the Städtli. Inside the castle visitors learn of the rise and fall of the counts and countesses, the everyday lives of knights and bailiffs, the later middle-class family owners and the final occupant. The Schlangenhaus Museum in the Städtli focuses on the living environment of Werdenberg’s inhabitants.
