The new knight's table

The huge wooden panel, made by Sevel carpenter Hansjakob Tinner from a Weymouth pine from Vilters, can be found in the Knights' Hall since May 2020.

The seven-metre-long table is made of individual boards, and it is held together without metal or glue, only with so-called dovetails made of the hard pear wood. The footrests are turned from the wood of the white willow, also called Felbe in German. As was the custom in the old days, the underframes were singed to make them durable: That is why they are all black. After that, the underframes were coated with linseed oil. The board itself is only planed and remains untreated.

Replicas of historical objects are presented on the knight’s table: Representative seals of the Counts of Werdenberg, the coat of arms of the Werdenbergs and their relatives on the Zurich coat of arms roll from the 14th century. The chronicle of Thomas Lirer on one side of the board, medieval musical instruments and drinking glasses on the other. Four audio plays from four different corners of the Knights' Hall tell different stories of a feast back in the days when the count received visitors. Welcome to the Middle Ages at Werdenberg Castle!

To use the hall for events, the table can be completely dismantled. Apéros in the special ambience of the Knights' Hall or events and even meals can be held at the new table. The Knights' Table was financed by the Friends of Werdenberg Castle Association.

The entire process of creation - from the model to the stately knight's table - can be seen below in the picture series!
